KAPIL DEV'S LEGACY~ FOLLOWED BY MS DHONI
MS DHONI; STEPPING ON KAPIL DEV SHOES
MS Dhoni’s announcement that he has retired from international cricket triggered a number of analyses which point out that he was not just a cricket star. His influenced extended beyond sport and he served as a source of inspiration for people in other fields.
The trajectory of Dhoni’s career does encapsulate important transitions in Indian cricket. He is perhaps the best example of the contribution of smaller cities in providing first-rate talent for the national team. Given his background, a lot more Indians can relate to Dhoni than some of his contemporaries.
Dhoni also played an important role in the spread of the popularity of T20 cricket in India. The format would surely have been the most popular one in India over a period of time. But India’s unexpected victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup under Dhoni’s captaincy compressed its evolution in the country.
Impressive as these things are, Dhoni is not a pioneer. He was preceded in most things by Kapil Dev, who was also a far more impactful cricketer for India.
Kapil Dev is the best all-rounder to have played for India. In his time, particularly the decade after his international debut in 1978, he encapsulated many characteristics that we today attribute to Dhoni.
Kapil Dev should be considered India’s first superstar to emerge from a cricketing backwater, who was relatable to a young and aspirational generation in mofussil India.
When Kapil Dev emerged from Haryana, representation in the national team was still dominated by Bombay. Delhi was fast emerging as a nursery of talent. But Haryana was nowhere in the picture.
Moreover, fast bowling in India came close to extinction after the Independence. India’s exceptional bowlers were spinners and its great all-rounder Vinoo Mankad also bowled spin.
Kapil Dev changed that and inspired a generation of fast bowlers. It may have taken four decades after his debut to produce a pack of fast bowlers who are as good as any in the world. But the pioneer was Kapil Dev.
Kapil Dev led India in the 1983 World Cup to possibly its most improbable victory ever. For sheer romance, nothing in Indian cricket has matched India’s first World Cup triumph. It also triggered a rapid growth of interest in limited-overs cricket. The interest was accompanied by the growth of television and the combined impact led to India’s ascent in global cricket administration.
The Kapil Dev era, which marked a decisive transition in the game’s commercialisation, helped some of the players win advertising contracts.
One, in which Kapil Dev featured, is a good example of what he represented to young Indians who did not have an elite background.
Kapil Dev became the brand ambassador of Rapidex English Speaking Course. A book that has even been featured in a movie.
